All SOP Staff are required to read and review the updated SOP manual on an annual basis. You can access the approved 2026-2027 SOP Manual here.
The main updates to the SOP Manual for the 2026-2027 school year included a review and updates to outdated language throughout the manual, along with new guidance on the use of generative AI tools. The new AI guidelines were reviewed and approved by VDOE’s Office of Cybersecurity and Risk Management. The additions below detail the more significant changes that were implemented this year.
Various sections throughout the manual were reviewed and updated to remove outdated language and reflect current terminology and citations.
Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools – New guidance was added addressing the responsible use of generative AI tools by SOP staff.
- Appropriate uses include brainstorming and generating ideas for lesson planning, drafting and editing documents containing public information only, summarizing public information for presentations and reports, and supporting personal professional learning.
- All AI generated content must be reviewed and validated by staff for accuracy, appropriateness, and relevance before use.
- Using AI tools does not transfer or reduce staff accountability for the quality of their work.
- SOP staff must also follow any AI related policies established by their employing school division, using only AI tools that are approved or authorized by that division.
- Student personally identifiable information must never be entered into, uploaded to, or processed by any external generative AI tool under any circumstances.
SOP Manual Quiz Requirement
All SOP staff and required to read and review the 2026-2026 SOP Manual and complete the following quiz below. You will need to earn at least a 14/15 correct on the Quiz to satisfy the requirement. The quiz due date is Monday, August 31. If you have any questions, contact your SOP leader.
